Dr. Simon's treatment has been a game-changer for me. Thanks to his skill and compassion, I am finally free from the debilitating pain of chronic headaches. I am eternally grateful.

Excellent service, receptionist so helpful kind and understanding, doctor called me back at expected time and script sent to my designated pharmacy immediately. At this stage when doctor surgeries are telling us we have to wait days for an appointment when seriously sick but not an emergency to go to A&E this service is an absolute lifesaver. Highly recommend for service , compassion and professionalism. Thankyou again

Frequently Asked Questions

Please read the FAQs carefully to ensure this service is suitable for you. They contain important information about eligibility, treatment options, and when to seek alternative care.

  • Our prescription service costs €25

  • This service is available to patients anywhere in Republic of Ireland.

  • Yes - this service is based on the same patient-doctor confidentiality that you would expect in a face-to-face consultation.

  • The morning after pill, also known as emergency contraception, is a type of treatment designed to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure. Unprotected sex refers to sexual intercourse without any contraception or situations where your contraception didn’t work properly, such as a broken condom or missed birth control pills.

There are two main types of emergency contraceptive pills available, both of which can be prescribed by our doctors at gp24.ie:

    • Levonorgestrel — often called the “three-day pill,” available under brand names like Norlevo or Prevenelle.

    • ellaOne — known as the “five-day pill” due to its effectiveness up to five days after unprotected sex.

In addition to these pills, there is also the emergency contraceptive coil (intrauterine copper device or IUCD), which is usually provided by local sexual health clinics.

  • You may be eligible to request emergency contraception treatment through GP24.ie if you:

    • You are 18 years of age or older

    • You were assigned female at birth

Please note: It is important to document your blood pressure and cardiovascular risk factors.

  • The morning after pill works primarily by stopping or postponing ovulation — the release of an egg from the ovary. By delaying ovulation, the pill prevents the egg from meeting sperm, reducing the chance of fertilisation and pregnancy.

  • The timing for taking the morning after pill depends on the type you are prescribed:

    • Levonorgestrel should be taken as soon as possible, ideally within 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sex.

    • ellaOne can be effective if taken up to 120 hours (5 days) after unprotected intercourse.

For the best chance of preventing pregnancy, it’s important to take the pill as soon as possible.

  • No, the morning after pill is intended for use only after unprotected sex and does not provide ongoing pregnancy prevention. However, the emergency contraceptive coil (intrauterine device) offers long-term protection and can prevent pregnancy for up to 10 years.

If you’re interested in reliable, ongoing contraception options, please explore our dedicated contraception service for expert advice and prescriptions.

  • Like any medication, the morning after pill (emergency contraception) can cause side effects in some people. Common reactions include feeling nauseous, dizzy, or tired. You might also experience headaches, breast tenderness, cramps similar to period pain, or diarrhoea. These symptoms usually resolve within a day or two.

The morning after pill can also affect your menstrual cycle. You might notice spotting before your period starts, or your period could arrive earlier or later than usual. If your period is delayed by more than a week, it’s a good idea to take a pregnancy test, as there is a small chance the emergency contraception did not prevent pregnancy.

  • Stop taking the medication and seek medical advice immediately. You can also contact us for follow-up support or guidance from one of our GPs.

  • No, the morning after pill (emergency contraception) does not offer any protection against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). If you’ve had unprotected sex, it’s important to consider getting tested for STIs. Our doctors recommend regular STI screening—at least once a year or whenever you start a new sexual relationship—to help keep you healthy.

  • Complete an Online Questionnaire: Fill out a secure, confidential medical assessment form detailing your symptoms and health history

Medical Review: An Irish-registered doctor will review your information to determine if treatment is appropriate for you

Prescription Issuance: If suitable, a prescription will be sent directly to your chosen Irish pharmacy via secure Healthmail

  • Yes. To ensure your safety, you’ll need to complete a confidential health questionnaire, which will be reviewed by a Doctor before any prescription is issued.

Your medical information is reviewed only by Irish Medical Council Registered Doctors and is handled in line with GDPR and Irish data protection laws.

  • Your prescription will be sent electronically via the Healthmail system to the Irish pharmacy of your choice - you can nominate any pharmacy in Ireland to receive your prescription

  • Once your medical questionnaire is submitted, prescriptions are typically issued within 24 hours.

(Please note this may vary on weekends)

  • Yes. If you're eligible, you can request another prescription for the morning after pill via GP24.ie. You’ll need to complete a short medical questionnaire which will be reviewed by one of our GPs. If clinically appropriate, your prescription will be sent directly to your preferred pharmacy.
