Excellent service, receptionist so helpful kind and understanding, doctor called me back at expected time and script sent to my designated pharmacy immediately. At this stage when doctor surgeries are telling us we have to wait days for an appointment when seriously sick but not an emergency to go to A&E this service is an absolute lifesaver. Highly recommend for service , compassion and professionalism. Thankyou again

Frequently Asked Questions

Please read the FAQs carefully to ensure this service is suitable for you. They contain important information about eligibility, treatment options, and when to seek alternative care.

  • Our prescription service costs €25

  • This service is available to patients anywhere in Republic of Ireland.

  • Yes - this service is based on the same patient-doctor confidentiality that you would expect in a face-to-face consultation.

  • If you’re not entirely sure about your condition and have not had a previous prescription, it is recommended that you first chat with our doctor using either our Video Consultation or Phone consultation services first.

  • Acid reflux is a common digestive condition where stomach acid flows back into the oesophagus (gullet), causing irritation. This backflow can lead to symptoms such as a sour taste in the mouth, a burning sensation in the chest (commonly known as heartburn), and discomfort after eating. When acid reflux occurs frequently or becomes more severe, it may be diagnosed as Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD).

Heartburn and acid reflux are often used interchangeably, but while acid reflux refers to the regurgitation of stomach acid, heartburn specifically describes the burning feeling in the chest. These symptoms often worsen after meals or when lying down.

  • Acid reflux occurs when the lower oesophageal sphincter (LES)—a muscle at the bottom of the oesophagus—doesn’t close properly. This allows stomach acid to escape and move upwards into the throat. Common causes and risk factors include:

    • Eating large or heavy meals

    • Lying down soon after eating

    • Being overweight or obese

    • Smoking

    • Pregnancy

    • Certain foods and drinks (like spicy foods, caffeine, and alcohol)

    • Some medications

For many people, acid reflux can be managed with lifestyle changes and treatment.

  • You may be eligible to request acid reflux treatment through GP24.ie if you:

    • Are over 18 years of age

    • Have been previously diagnosed with acid reflux or GORD by a healthcare professional

    • Need a repeat prescription for commonly prescribed acid reflux medication

    • Are under 50 years of age

Please note: It is advised that you have blood tests done and checked by your GP for any side effects, especially long-term use.

  • At GP24.ie, you can request prescriptions for effective acid reflux treatments to help relieve symptoms like heartburn, regurgitation, and chest discomfort—whether your condition is occasional or ongoing.

For mild or occasional symptoms, over-the-counter remedies such as antacids and alginate-based products (like Gaviscon) can provide quick relief by neutralising stomach acid or forming a protective barrier in the stomach.

If you’ve previously been diagnosed with acid reflux or GORD and need long-term symptom control, our GPs can prescribe effective medications such as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) or H2-receptor antagonists. These treatments work by reducing acid production in the stomach and are ideal for managing frequent or severe symptoms.

All prescription requests are reviewed by our experienced GPs and issued if clinically appropriate—making ongoing acid reflux treatment simple, safe, and accessible from home.

  • Acid reflux medications, such as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and H2 blockers, are generally safe but may cause some side effects. Common ones include headache, nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, or stomach discomfort. Long-term use of PPIs may also affect nutrient absorption or increase the risk of certain infections. Other uncommon side effects include Sodium, Glucose and Magnesium metabolism.

Most side effects are mild, but if you notice anything unusual or persistent, it’s important to speak with a doctor. Always follow the prescribed dosage for safe and effective treatment.

  • Stop taking the medication and seek medical advice immediately. You can also contact us for follow-up support or guidance from one of our GPs.

  • Complete an Online Questionnaire: Fill out a secure, confidential medical assessment form detailing your symptoms and health history

Medical Review: An Irish-registered doctor will review your information to determine if treatment is appropriate for you

Prescription Issuance: If suitable, a prescription will be sent directly to your chosen Irish pharmacy via secure Healthmail

  • Yes. To ensure your safety, you’ll need to complete a confidential health questionnaire, which will be reviewed by a Doctor before any prescription is issued.

Your medical information is reviewed only by Irish Medical Council Registered Doctors and is handled in line with GDPR and Irish data protection laws.

  • Your prescription will be sent electronically via the Healthmail system to the Irish pharmacy of your choice - you can nominate any pharmacy in Ireland to receive your prescription

  • Once your medical questionnaire is submitted, prescriptions are typically issued within 24 hours.

(Please note this may vary on weekends)

  • Yes. If you're eligible and your condition is well-controlled, you can request a repeat prescription for your usual acid reflux medication via GP24.ie. You’ll need to complete a short medical questionnaire which will be reviewed by one of our GPs. If clinically appropriate, your prescription will be sent directly to your preferred pharmacy.
